Biography

Daniel G. Tobin, MD, FACP is an Assistant Professor at Yale University School of Medicine and the Medical Director for the Adult Primary Care Center at the Saint Raphael Campus of Yale-New Haven Hospital. In addition to working as a Clinician-Educator with the Yale Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program, Dr. Tobin also has a busy primary care practice of his own and oversees the ambulatory care activities of the medical practice. He graduated medical school from Weill Cornell Medical College in 1999 before completing his residency training in Internal Medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He subsequently served as a Chief Medical Resident before joining the faculty at Yale. Since then, he has held key academic appointments with the Yale Traditional Internal Medicine Residency Program, the Yale-Waterbury Internal Medicine Residency Program, and the Yale Primary Care Residency Program. He is board certified in Internal Medicine.

Areas of academic interest include chronic pain management, prescription drug abuse and opioid safety, quality of care, administrative medicine, and medical education. His clinical expertise includes the diagnosis and management of complex medical conditions in the inpatient and outpatient settings. He has additional training and experience in administrative medicine and the medical-legal aspects of complex care. Additionally, he has supervised the implementation of an electronic medical record system across a multi-specialty practice and has developed expertise in system-based practice improvement.

Dr. Tobin is a Past-President for the New England Region of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) and currently oversees all the SGIM Regional Presidents as the Chair of the Board of Regional Leaders and as a member of the SGIM Leadership Council. Additionally, he serves on the Governor’s Council for the CT Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP).

He has collaborated with the Commissioner for the CT Department of Public Health and leaders within the CT Department of Consumer Protection to educate prescribers, public health officials, patient advocates, and government leaders on the safe use of opioids for the management of chronic pain. In 2013 he joined a key CT task force to further develop prescription drug abuse prevention programs with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO).

In 2013 he was named Teacher of the Year from the Yale Primary Care IM Residency Program and in 2015 he was given the Clinician-Educator of the Year Award by the New England Region of SGIM.
