Dr. Vagenas is an Associate Research Scientist at the Yale AIDS Program. He has a Ph.D. in immunology from Imperial College London (U.K.) and a Masters in Public Health from the Yale School of Public Health. His research focuses on the intersection of substance abuse and HIV, with a particular emphasis on alcohol use disorders among people with or at risk for HIV Infection. He is currently involved with a wide array of research projects on substance use disorders among HIV+ patients, including a randomized placebo controlled clinical trial of oral naltrexone among men who have sex with men in Peru (Frederick L. Altice, PI) and two randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials of extended-release naltrexone (XR-NTX) among recently released HIV+ prisoners with opiate and/or alcohol addiction in Connecticut and Massachusetts (Sandra A. Springer, PI).

    This study will assess the feasibility and potential impact of incorporating interventions to reduce high rates of onward transmission associated with acute HIV infection (AHI) and unsafe sex practices and poor medication adherence due to alcohol use.
