Below are tips and information from the Fellow Advisory Committee! This is just meant to be a resource, as it’s based on past experience; properties (and personal preferences!) vary and change over time. We wish you the best in finding a fantastic home for your internship year!
- Utilities: Ask if heat/hot water is included. These bills can increase dramatically during winter months.
- Parking: Many buildings or garages have long waitlists, so add your name early to ensure a spot when you arrive. Areas with zone parking often charge a one time fee based on the year and model of your car.
- Pets: Housing options are generally much more restricted if you have pets, especially living downtown.
- Yale Shuttle: The Orange and Blue lines run daily throughout downtown and East Rock at approximately 15-minute intervals from around 6:30 am-11 pm or later. There’s an app, "TransLoc Rider," to track the shuttles so you know when they’ll be arriving! For more information, visit Yale Shuttle.
- Daily Commuters: Fellows are asked to live no farther than a 1 hour commute from their placement site. Interstates 91 & 95 are heavily congested during rush hour so factor this in when estimating travel time.
Located within walking distance (or a very quick trip on the Yale Shuttle) to the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC), The Yale Department of Psychiatry, and Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH). If traveling to another Yale clinic/satellite, having a vehicle is recommended. Being downtown allows easy access to restaurants, shopping, the Yale gym and campus, and the downtown nightlife. The majority of housing options downtown are in apartment buildings, and there are several large apartment buildings that are common choices of Yale fellows.
The Consultation Center is located right in the heart of this neighborhood. This neighborhood is also located just 1-2 miles north of Downtown New Haven and is on the Yale Shuttle Line, which provides free transportation to CMHC, The Yale Department of Psychiatry, and YNHH. It is a 10 minute drive from the Substance Abuse Treatment Unit (SATU) and Forensic Drug Division (FORDD), and a 15 minute drive from West Haven Mental Health Clinic (WHMHC). It's known for housing predoctoral fellows, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and early career faculty. The neighborhood is named for its location near East Rock Park.

Hamden is a 10-minute commute from New Haven, not on the Yale Shuttle Line, so a vehicle is recommended. Hamden offers a suburban atmosphere, with nearby grocery stores, shopping centers, and chain restaurants.
Westville is the westernmost area of New Haven, about two miles west of Downtown and the main Yale campus. Westville is bordered by the Yale Bowl and the Yale Golf Course, the West River, West Rock Ridge State Park, and Edgewood Park. Sports and fitness lovers can enjoy the parks for hiking, biking, and running, as well as athletics at Yale Field. Westville’s housing consists mainly of one family and multi-family homes. Many graduate students and faculty live in this area, and fellows in this area recommend having a vehicle for transportation.
West Haven is a 10-15 minute commute from New Haven. It is one mile from Savin Rock Beach. Most residents do not swim at this beach, they mainly use the paved running trails along the beach. Few psychology predoctoral fellows tend to live in West Haven.
Located several miles west of Downtown New Haven, this neighborhood is not on the Yale Shuttle Line. While East Rock residents are primarily Yale-affiliated, West Rock is a community which is more non-Yale-affiliated. West Rock is close to the Southern Connecticut State University campus, so there are typically many undergraduates.
Wooster Square lies east of Yale and is relatively close to main campus. At the center is Wooster Square Park, which glows with cherry blossoms in the spring. Wooster Street is home to New Haven's “Little Italy,” including two famous pizza restaurants, Sally’s and Pepe’s, among other eateries. Some of the brick townhouses in this neighborhood boast beautiful small gardens for their residents.
