The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce the appointment of cardiac surgeon, Rita Milewski MD, PhD, as Co-Director of the Adult Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Program for the Yale New Haven Health Heart & Vascular Center. Dr. Milewski will serve in the position alongside anesthesiologist and interventionist, Bhoumesh Patel MD.
In their new roles, Drs. Milewski and Patel will work closely with the Chief of Cardiac Surgery, Chief of Cardiac Anesthesiology, and Dr. Roland Assi — recently appointed Medical Director of Perfusion — to oversee the overall ECMO operation at the York Street and Bridgeport campuses.
“The provision of ECMO services for patients with advanced heart and lung failure involves the engagement of physicians, nursing, administrative leadership, and resources across multiple disciplines,” said Francine LoRusso, Vice President and Executive Director for Heart and Vascular Services.
“Drs. Milewski and Patel will be instrumental in the development of an ECMO services dashboard, clinical practice pathways, and program education that will support the optimal alignment of our clinical teams and ensure the highest quality provision of patient care.”
