Biography

As a clinician in the urology department at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Richard J. Dean treats patients with general urological issues, such as recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), reoccurring kidney stones, erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostrate. He also sees patients with more serious issues including bladder and prostate cancer. “I enjoy being able to correct urological problems with both surgery and medical management,” says Dr. Dean.

For over 34 years, Dr. Dean has served many roles in the Yale community, including Attending Urologist at Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) and the Hospital of Saint Raphael, Assistant Clinical Professor at YSM and Associate Chief of Urology at YNHH from 1998 to 2013.

Dr. Dean joins three of his Yale colleagues in the urology department as a 2015 “Top Doc” ranked by Connecticut Magazine. He also attends the annual prostate screening events hosted by Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center. Currently, he sees patients on the Connecticut shoreline in both Madison, Old Saybrook and in the Hamden office.

Dr. Dean received both his BS and MD from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. To further his medical training, he completed both a Surgical residency and internship at YNHH followed by a residency in Urology. Before coming to New Haven, he was the Assistant Chief of Urology at Womack Army Hospital in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Dr. Dean is a member of the American Urological Association, the New England Section of the American Urological Association and the Connecticut State Medical Society.
