Why Yale? Yale is a balanced program – I found great surgical training, mentors, and co-residents in a place with a great quality of life.

Why New Haven? New Haven grew on me. I, as many are, was uncertain at first of how living in New Haven would be after moving from New York City. But, it has all the amenities of a big city with a small town feel.

    Random fact: I skipped kindergarten.

  • Hospital Resident

    Education
MD, Emory University School of Medicine, 2019; BA, Dartmouth College, 2014

    Hometown: Memphis, TN

Post-Residency Plan: Endourology/MIS Fellowship at Vanderbilt

Why Yale? I did a sub-internship at Yale, loved it, and most importantly, still love it. Honestly, most urology programs are great. It can be hard to make a decision, so it’s the little differences that distinguish programs. I think our unique component would be balance. It’s something that describes our program well. We have excellent volume, every subspecialty covered, the perfect mix of autonomy with the right amount of guidance and teaching, all in a way that makes you work hard and feel fulfilled as a future surgeon yet still be able to enjoy a personal life and have fun. I’m really proud of our program and blessed to train as a resident here.

Why New Haven? New Haven is legit awesome. It is an urban city with a small town feel, it is charming but also gritty - it is diverse, it is real. It is perfectly situated where you have so many great places nearby-New York City, Boston, yet it is not one of those places where the only appeal is the nearby cities you can go to. There’s a ton to do here, especially over 5 years. And while every single place says they have great food, I stand by the fact that New Haven really does have incredible food—some of the best I’ve ever had and a big surprise for me for a city of its size. Another key is all the hospitals being within 5-10 minute drive and almost everything you’d need being within a 15 minute drive, this is an underrated component for a busy surgical resident. All in all, New Haven is really a special place to live.

Random fact: I own Popeye’s stock.

Why Yale? I felt Yale was a place where I would be really well-supported in my training. From the clinical perspective, we have fellowship-trained faculty across all urologic subspecialties. Our faculty have trained at a wide variety of institutions. You not only have more diverse surgical training, but it is also great for networking for both fellowship and private practice career opportunities. From the resident perspective, you can tell the resident group was (and still is) very close knit. We all work really well together and support one another.

Why New Haven? New Haven is a really nice place to live. We have great restaurants (New Haven pizza!), cool bars, theaters, state parks, and beaches. It offers everything that a major city does, but at a much more affordable price.

Why Yale? Yale is a remarkable urology residency program in the northeast that provides excellent training in all of the subspecialties of urology. The program is designed to make you become the best possible urologist you can be. The residents in the residency program are down-to-earth, fun-loving, and a motivated group of individuals. This allows us to get residency work done in a relatively stress-free and enjoyable environment.

Why New Haven? New Haven is a blend of an urban city along with a residential town, allowing you to feel comfortable without becoming overwhelmed. It brings the convenience of a city along with the calmness and familiarity of a town. From all the places I have lived, New Haven has the best food scene I have experienced. Cost of living is very affordable. The culture and history of the undergraduate campus adds an extra flair to the place. If you drive 10 minutes in one direction, you’ll reach amazing hikes, while driving 10 minutes in the opposite direction will bring coastal beaches.

Why Yale? Yale Urology has a unique blend of excellent clinical volume, multiple training sites, a wide array of opportunities for clinical research, and a supportive training environment. I am most proud of our resident culture. We support and look out for each other. The attendings here are also very approachable. As someone who had never lived outside of their home state (Kentucky), I quickly felt at home here at Yale and am very thankful for the opportunity to train here.

Why New Haven? New Haven is an awesome place to live during residency training. First, the city is affordable. The restaurant scene is great for a city of its size. From Yale museums to events put on by the city of New Haven, there is always something to do. Additionally, the city is very close to Boston and NYC. Over the years, Yale Urology has consistently matched residents into various fellowships and private practice jobs throughout the country giving me confidence that I can truly pursue any route that interests me. In addition, mentorship and research opportunities are available in abundance. The emphasis placed on work-life balance by faculty and the residency overall is yet another reason why I chose to join the Yale Urology family.
