Introducing our Newest APD!

February 04, 2024
by Mark David Siegel

Hi everyone:

This morning, I’m pleased to announce that Dr. Jacqueline (Jackie) Savage will be joining us in April as our newest Associate Program Director.

Dr. Savage graduated from our residency in 2017 and is now an Assistant Professor at U Conn, where she serves as an APD and Vice Chair for Education at Hartford Hospital. Dr. Savage has won several teaching awards at U Conn, supervising residents in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. She serves in leadership roles with the Connecticut ACP and has wide-ranging interests, including resident well-being, support for women in medicine, and DEI.

As an APD, Dr. Savage will advise residents, co-direct ambulatory education with Dr. McNamara, precept at the NHPCC, attend on the Whitman Firm, and lead community engagement efforts.

For today’s announcement, I asked Jackie to (re)-introduce herself:

If I had to describe myself it would be as a southern girl with Latina roots. I was born in Miami Florida and learned English and Spanish at the same time. My father joined the Army and I moved around the south living near military bases in Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina. We settled in South Carolina where I completed my undergraduate education at Wofford College with a dual degree in Biology and Spanish. I went on to complete my undergraduate medical education at the oldest medical school in the south, the Medical University of South Carolina, which is celebrating their bicentennial this year in 2024. From there I ventured North and trained in internal medicine residency at Yale New Haven Hospital. It was here in Connecticut that I built my home, family, and career. I have an 8 year old daughter Sofia, who loves all things cheerleading and Taylor Swift, and a 1.5 year old son, Connor, who is learning to talk and loves Bluey on the Disney Channel. My husband, Nicholas and I also raise four dogs! We have two Pomeranians (Coco and Mochi) and two Labrador retrievers (Ellie and Toby). We spend our days vacuuming up dog hair and Legos, but also, we love to travel together. We hope to explore and learn with our children about the beautiful diversity our world has to offer. I am really looking forward to getting reacquainted with Yale and all the wonderful faculty I learned from and will continue to learn from as I immerse myself in the NHPCC. I hope to collaborate with our local and state communities to further drive high value quality care and build more curricula for our residents to further diversify their education.

And now for some Jackie pics:

It seems like just yesterday that Jackie Savage was one of our wonderful residents, learning at Morning Report, teaching interns on the floors, and taking care of her clinic patients at the VA. And now, just 7 years later, she’s a premier medical educator, coming home.

Enjoy your Sunday, everyone. I’ll be crunching numbers today, preparing for Friday’s Rank Meeting. But first, a hike up East Rock!

Mark

P.S. Please join us Tuesday evening for Arts Night 2024! If you’ve read this far, you’re invited! See you there!
