Welcome Paul Bernstein!

by Mark David Siegel

Hi everyone,

I’m thrilled to announce that Dr. Paul Bernstein will be joining us in April as our new Associate Program Director (APD) for Ambulatory Education. We’re immensely fortunate: Dr. Bernstein is a master clinician-educator with decades of experience. He will advise residents, lead the ambulatory teaching curriculum, mentor the PCC Chief Resident, precept residents in clinic, and help orchestrate the transition to our new primary care site on Long Wharf.

Dr. Bernstein graduated from Union College in 1982, where he earned a BA in Biology. He then attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he was elected to AOA. In 1988, he joined the Yale Traditional Internal Medicine Residency, serving as Chief Resident from 1991-1992. From 1992-1995, he was a Yale nephrology fellow, and after that, he joined the faculty at the University of Rochester. From 1997-2000, he was an APD for the University of Rochester Primary Care Residency, and from 2000-2012, he was Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency at Rochester General Hospital. Over the years, Paul has served in several other leadership roles, and he’s received countless awards for exceptional teaching. Here’s what else you need to know about Paul: His wife, Tamie DiNolfo, is an OB-GYN, also trained at Yale. They have two daughters (Rebecca and Elena) and a famous son (Ethan). Here’s a message from Paul:

Returning home. It’s a theme in our family. I went to Union College which happened to launch my father’s medical career, and then attended Albert Einstein for medical school having been born at their own Jacobi Hospital in The Bronx. 7 years at Yale for my wife Tamie and me, she in Ob-Gyn and starting as an Attending, and I as Resident, Chief Resident and Nephrology Fellow. During this time, Ethan shows up tormented with the same dominant gene. Back to Rochester New York, for 25 years where Tamie grew up, to raise our family. Along the way it has always been about education: as Nephrology attending, A/PD for 15 years, with residents or medical students, on the tennis court, ultimate Frisbee field or martial arts dojo. And now back to Yale New Haven Hospital where it seems somehow the quality and character of the talented Residents and Faculty have never changed. Maybe salmon are onto something.

If we succeed as a residency, it’s because of the talented, dedicated people who make up our family. With Dr. Bernstein, we’ve added another all-star to our phenomenal team of APDs. Just as important, Paul will bring boundless creativity, energy, humor, and kindness to our community. Please give him a warm welcome!

Dr. Bernstein can be reached at Paul.Bernstein@rochesterregional.org.

Yours,

Mark

PS The match list is in, and we’ll be flying to Ireland this evening for a week of R&R. Pics to follow.
