What Were You Thinking?

Hi everyone,

What Were You Thinking?

What were you thinking

When the dawn broke

And I called your name,

And you saw me,

Looking down?

What were you thinking

When I peeled back your Johnny

And exposed your swollen belly,

And tapped and pressed

And asked if it hurt?

What were you thinking

When I said a mass,

On the MRI,

Explained your jaundice

And weight loss?

What were you thinking

When I asked, “any questions?”

And you shook your head,

Eyes glistening,

Gaze averted?

What were you thinking

When you looked outside

At the gulls and starlings,

Alighting above the rooftops

Into the cloudless sky?

What were you thinking

When I turned away,

And wiped my hands

And said I’d return,

And shut the door?

What you were thinking

When the team said “cancer”

Outside your room

And how sorry we felt,

For you?

And what were you thinking

As you lay there,

Hands on your belly,

Waiting, waiting, waiting,

In silence?

Mark
