Your Experience

As a trauma fellow and critical member of the trauma service, you will manage polytraumatized patients as well as those with open fractures or mangled limbs. You will receive exposure to acute fracture care for a range of injuries, which include periarticular and long bone fractures of the upper and lower extremity, pelvic ring and acetabulum, and hind- and mid-foot. You will also participate in soft tissue coverage procedures that include split thickness skin grafting and rotational flaps of the lower leg.

During your one-year fellowship with us, you will also gain experience in arthroplasty of the shoulder, hip, and knee in a trauma setting, focused didactics, which include lectures, journal clubs, case discussions, and cadaver labs, broad-ranging biomechanical and clinical research opportunities, and will be expected to serve as a mentor and educator for both medical students and residents.

You will have the opportunity to attend the Orthopaedic Trauma Association Annual Meeting as well as participate in cadaver courses, pelvis courses, and the fellow forum made possible through the AO Foundation. David Frumberg, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Yale School of Medicine. He is co-director of the Yale Limb Restoration and Lengthening Program. He is the director of the Cerebral Palsy Program at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He specializes in complex orthopedic conditions that require more attention and care. He works closely with patients and their families to understand their needs and unique goals. He enjoys collaborating with other medical professionals to maximize the functioning and comfort of patients of all ages. Dr. Frumberg utilizes state of the art surgical techniques, and is devoted to providing his patients with innovative and compassionate care. He is devoted to studying the effect of aging in neurodevelopmental disorders, and how he can intervene to keep his patients performing to their highest abilities. His adult clinic offers treatment for other contracture-producing neurologic conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal cord injury.Dr. Frumberg also cares for patients with complex limb problems, co-directing the Yale Limb Restoration and Lengthening Program. He completed a traveling fellowship with the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society, where he received specialized training with the nation’s leading experts in complex limb reconstruction. He applies this expertise as a member of Yale's Pediatric Metabolic Bone Program. He has expertise in fractures that have not healed, or those that healed incorrectly. He performs limb lengthening surgery and surgery to restore limb function for both children and adults. He is also an expert in stature lengthening, also called height surgery, which includes both increasing and decreasing height.

Michael Medvecky, MD

Dr. Medvecky joined the faculty of Yale Orthopaedics 2001 after completing his subspecialty fellowship training in orthopaedic sports medicine, arthroscopy and reconstructive knee & shoulder surgery at Cincinnati Sportsmedicine & Orthopaedic Center. Under the direction of Frank Noyes, MD, an internationally recognized authority on complex knee injuries & conditions, he gained experience in diagnosing and treating the most complicated conditions that sports medicine surgeons will face. Prior to this training, he completed his internship and residency in Manhattan at NYU-Bellevue Hospital Medical Center and New York University-Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopaedic Institute, respectively. He is presently a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Vice-Chair for Faculty Affairs within the Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation, in addition to serving as the Fellowship Director for the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship, which trains one post-graduate surgeon per year in the sub-specialty care of orthopaedic sports medicine. Since starting practice, he has also been an active participant in the Yale-New Haven Hospital Level-1 Orthopaedic Trauma Service, assisting in the care of poly-traumatized patients. His coupled interests in sports medicine and orthopaedic trauma have given him experience in the evaluation and treatment of complex knee and shoulder injuries and he utilizes both arthroscopic and open approaches to treat ligament, meniscus and articular cartilage injuries, based upon biomechanical and anatomical principles and proven clinical studies. Dr. Medvecky serves as the Head Team Physician & Head Orthopedic Surgeon for the WNBA Connecticut Sun based at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. He is also a consultant orthopaedist to the Yale University Athletic teams. He has also played an active role in regional athletic event coverage and continues to voluntarily serve the New Haven Road Race for over 15 years. He has previously served as Head Tournament physician for the WTA Connecticut Open tennis tournament, until its departure from New Haven in 2019 as well as the New England Blackwolves men’s professional indoor lacrosse. Dr. Medvecky has been an active participant in graduate medical education and received the University Faculty Teaching Award for his contribution to the Yale-New Haven Hospital orthopaedic residency education. He has established an annual post-graduate medical education course to teach practicing primary care physicians how to best evaluate & treat musculoskeletal conditions seen in their practice. In his efforts to promote health and safety in youth and adult athletics, he also serves on the CT State Medical Society’s Committee on the Medical Aspects of Sports.
