GEOHealth-MENA PhD Program

Course of Study

Advanced degree training is offered through the well-established graduate programs in public health at the American University of Beirut Faculty of Health Sciences.

The PhD in Epidemiology Program requires the completion of 27.5 credit hours of course work beyond the master's degree and 24 credit hours of thesis work.

The course work consists of:

  • 16 credits of core epidemiology and biostatistics courses
  • 1.5 credit of core research courses
  • 4-5 credits selected from a specified set of epidemiology and biostatistics courses
  • 5-6 credits of pre-approved elective courses.
  • 10 credits of EOH courses. For the dissertation, primary data collection is a requirement.

Formal degree work is coupled with ongoing research on refugee agricultural workers and mentored research training at Yale University and the University of Iowa in the US.


Research

PhD trainees will conduct research alongside their degree coursework. The accepted candidates will be engaged with ongoing research on refugee agricultural workers and will have the opportunity to travel to Yale University and the University of Iowa in the US for advanced and relevant research training.

Other Support

PhD trainees of the program will also receive other support to round out their formal coursework including:

  • Health Insurance plan (HIP)
  • A monthly stipend to support living expenses
  • One laptop
  • English language test fees
  • A monthly housing stipend for students in need of dorms
  • Travel to Yale University and the University of Iowa in the USA for environmental and occupational health research trainings
  • Flight fees from and to Lebanon (for students coming from abroad)
